🍀In mid-December, Peru found itself in a state of emergency due to widespread protest marches. By the 22nd, most of the demonstrations had calmed down, and we seized the opportunity to embark on our adventure! We returned to Los Angeles on the 3rd without encountering any significant obstacles. We celebrated a memorable birthday in the enchanting Sacred Valley and welcomed the New Year in the lush rainforest. Our journey was filled with incredible experiences, leaving us with no regrets and a treasure trove of unforgettable memories!
🇵🇪Visa: Travelers with a Chinese passport and a valid US visa or green card can enter Peru without a visa, making it easy to fly directly.
💉Vaccines: If you plan to explore the rainforest, a yellow fever vaccine is essential. In the US, you can get this at Passport Health Travel Clinic.
💰Currency: The local currency is the Peruvian sol. It’s wise to bring some US dollars to exchange locally, as it’s much more cost-effective than exchanging at banks. Credit cards are widely accepted at tourist sites, restaurants, shops, and hotels.
💬Language: While Spanish is the official language, using English for tourism is generally not a problem.
✈️Airports: Peruvian airports tend to be small, and security checks are usually quick. It’s advisable to choose major airlines like LATAM, known for their reliability.
🚗Transportation: Uber is available in Lima and Cusco, making it convenient to get around. In Iquitos, tuk-tuks are the primary mode of transportation, as Uber is not available.
💊Altitude Sickness Medication (for Cusco): You’ll need a prescription from a doctor for Diamox, which should be taken orally.
💊Malaria Medication (for the rainforest): A prescription from a doctor is required for malaria medication, which is also taken orally.
⭕️Machu Picchu
We opted for the 2 Days Tour: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu by Train, a well-organized and comprehensive experience. The first day included visits to the Sacred Valley, an alpaca ranch, Taray, Pisac, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. In the afternoon, we boarded the train to Aguas Calientes, where we spent the night. The next morning, we took the bus up the mountain to explore Machu Picchu, following route 2. We were fortunate to have a sunny day, and the views were breathtaking! This tour includes a knowledgeable guide, all transportation, comfortable accommodation in Aguas Calientes (including breakfast), train tickets, and bus tickets, with different guides providing insights throughout the journey.
⭕️Iquitos Rainforest
We booked a 4-day, 3-night adventure with Libertad Jungle Lodge, a truly immersive experience. One guide accompanied us throughout, ensuring a seamless and enriching stay. The package included accommodation, transportation, three meals a day, and a variety of exciting rainforest activities. We visited the bustling Iquitos market, the Amazon animal rescue center, and went on a thrilling rainforest hike, bird watching, sloth finding, monkey watching, and night spider hunting. We also enjoyed canoeing and watched the stunning sunset over the river. The accommodation was in rustic cabins, equipped with basic amenities such as indoor flush toilets and showers, and mosquito nets. Electricity was available from 6-9 pm every night, and there was no Wi-Fi, allowing us to fully disconnect. The food was light and healthy, and after a few days, we felt rejuvenated and refreshed.
⭕️Ancient City of Cusco
Perched at an altitude of 3300 meters, Cusco may cause altitude sickness for some visitors. Originally the capital of the Inca Empire, it was later occupied by the Spaniards. History and culture enthusiasts will find endless fascination here, with its rich Inca heritage and colonial architecture.
