Due to budget constraints, we opted for Chile and Peru—both visa-free destinations for Americans—for our South American adventure. During the planning phase, we were thrilled to discover that half of Tierra del Fuego is in Chile, offering us the unique opportunity to reach the southernmost point of the inhabited world without needing an Argentine visa or venturing to Antarctica.
Navigating the logistics, we found that there are no road bridges connecting Tierra del Fuego to the mainland, and travel blogger guides on self-driving tours are scarce both domestically and internationally. With limited time, we couldn’t afford to spend a night in Punta Arenas. After relentless research and frame-by-frame translation of Spanish, we finally uncovered a cargo ferry port. The ferry operates every half hour, allowing us to depart almost immediately upon arrival.
We drove for two hours from the Punta Arenas airport to the port, boarded the newly upgraded [Made in China🇨🇳] ferry in 2024, and smoothly crossed the Strait of Magellan. The journey was exhilarating, and we successfully reached the southernmost point of the inhabited world! Tomorrow, we will be among the first visitors to the Tierra del Fuego King Penguin Park, ready to start our day early and make the most of this incredible experience!!!
