I’ve heard that the safety in Santiago, the capital of Chile, is not very good, so I decided to drive and stay in the suburbs for a nearby trip, but I fell into another trap.
▪️We chose to stay at the Pullman Hotel in Vina del Mar, a popular beach destination near Santiago that seemed very safe. We parked our rented car right in front of the hotel and checked out the next day, unaware that we were already being targeted by criminals.
▪️After driving just a few blocks, someone knocked on our car window, warning us that the rear tire was flat. Sure enough, the car’s pressure sensor indicated zero pressure in the right rear tire. We turned a corner and pulled over to change the spare tire.
▪️Our luggage, which had been securely stored in the trunk, now had to be moved to the back seat.
At this moment, a “helpful” stranger approached and instructed us to set up a red road sign (picture). Not understanding his instructions, we struggled to place the warning signs (later, locals informed us that these signs were completely unnecessary!). As we began changing the tire, the “helper” left without a word.
▪️While replacing the tire, we discovered a small nail embedded in it. After finishing, we suddenly realized that our luggage from the back seat was missing! It had been stolen!
▪️Calling 133 to report the crime was futile, so we returned to the hotel and sought help from the front desk. The hotel staff, fluent in English, assisted us in reporting the incident and assured us that the police would arrive within 20 minutes.
We waited for over two hours before the police finally showed up. With the hotel’s help in explaining the situation, the police took some notes, mentioning that a similar incident had occurred nearby!
▪️In hindsight, that nail must have been deliberately placed by a criminal gang targeting tourists with rental cars.
They follow you, alert you to the problem, and then offer assistance as part of their scheme. While you are preoccupied with setting up the warning sign, they make their move!
🚨I’m sharing this to warn everyone about this new method of crime!
😭The police told us to wait for further action, but will there be any follow-up?
