Not driving in the Patagonian plateau is truly a missed opportunity [Praise][Praise]. Is there anyone else who, like me, was immediately captivated by the vast wilderness as soon as they stepped off the plane in Puerto Natales? Driving a 4×4 in such a place is nothing short of exhilarating (though horseback riding is also an option!).

Torres del Paine National Park is a perfect destination for self-driving. Many travelers choose to drive themselves, and I only wish I had known this before my trip! Despite some small rocks, the roads are generally clear and well-maintained. (Be sure to buy a map and stop at each scenic point where tourists gather.)

My self-driving route this time was a round trip between Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, which is straightforward with just one main road. The first half of the journey offers endless pastures stretching across the plateau, while the second half follows a stunning coastal highway [Crying]. It’s incredibly enjoyable to drive, with beautiful scenery, minimal traffic, and the freedom to go at your own pace.

Most travel guides on Xiaohongshu recommend taking a bus, but renting a car gives you the flexibility to stop whenever and wherever you want. Along the way, you can discover fields of lupines, hidden beaches, and breathtaking sunsets , all at your leisure.

Another reason to rent a car is the chance to visit the southernmost point of the South American continent. Punta Arenas is the southernmost city, and it takes an additional two hours to drive there, a journey that is only possible by car.

Tips: In Chile, you can use a translated version of your Chinese driver’s license (search on Xiaohongshu for more details). Use Google Maps and Instagram to find car rental companies; keywords like “rent a car Patagonia” will help. Many travel agencies also offer car rental services, so reach out to them via WhatsApp.
It’s advisable to choose an agency with no mileage restrictions, as it’s easy to exceed the limit. Opt for a larger and heavier car, as the strong winds and high speeds can be challenging. There is only one gas station along the route from Natales to Punta, so make sure to refuel appropriately.
