Today, I embarked on a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Santiago to the vibrant coastal city of Valparaíso, where a holiday spirit fills the air.
Valparaíso, often referred to as the “Valley of Paradise,” is a gem nestled along the Pacific coast. This captivating city serves as the legislative capital of Chile, hosting the seat of Congress, and is also the capital of both Valparaíso Province and the Valparaíso Region. It boasts the distinction of being Chile’s largest seaport, located just 120 kilometers northwest of Santiago.
With a population of 284,630 (as of 2012), it stands as the sixth-largest city in the country. The Greater Valparaíso Metropolitan Area, centered around this bustling hub, is the second-largest metropolitan area in Chile.
**Check-in 1: Naval and Maritime Museum**
I visited the fascinating Museo Naval Y Maritimo, where the rich naval history of Chile comes alive. Admission for locals is 2500 pesos, while foreign visitors pay 4500 pesos (approximately 30 RMB). The museum offers a captivating journey through the Pacific War, detailed ship models, and thrilling Antarctic expeditions.
**Check-in 2: Restaurant La Concepción**
My next stop was the highly recommended Restaurant La Concepción, a charming seaside establishment known for its delectable seafood. Unfortunately, I arrived too early, as the restaurant only opens at 1 PM. Despite missing out, I can’t wait to return and savor their culinary delights.
**Check-in 3: Street Graffiti**
One of the most striking features of Valparaíso is its vibrant street art. The colorful graffiti adorning the city’s walls adds a unique and lively character to every corner, making it a must-see for any visitor.
As for the safety concerns that I had read about online, I found the city to be quite safe and welcoming.
