In 2019, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Easter Island, where I spent three enchanting days exploring the island by car. My most cherished moments were at Ahu Tongariki and the crater. Below, I share an introduction to these captivating attractions and some practical tips.

**Sunrise**
Ahu Tongariki (Fifteen Moai). This is the most impressive and uniform group of stone statues on the island, boasting 15 majestic figures. Located on the easternmost part of the island, the moai face away from the sea, creating a breathtaking scene as the sun rises over the ocean, casting its warm light over their shoulders. During my visit, I rented a car and visited Ahu Tongariki three times, but nothing compared to the magical morning glow.

**Sunset**
Ahu Tahai (Five Moai). Situated on the western side of the island, within a short walk from the town, this group of five moai also faces away from the sea, a common orientation for the island’s stone statues. It’s the perfect spot to sit on the grass in front of the moai, watch the sunset, and bask in the serene evening atmosphere. Afterward, head to a nearby restaurant to the south for a delightful dinner.

**Daytime**
Rano Raraku (Quarry). Located on the eastern side of the island, not far from Ahu Tongariki, this site is accessible with an all-inclusive ticket that allows only one entry. Here, you can witness the birthplace of the moai, with various unfinished statues scattered throughout. At the end of the scenic area, you can enjoy a distant view of Ahu Tongariki; don’t forget to bring a telephoto lens for some stunning shots.

Ahu Akivi (Seven Moai). One of the few groups of moai that face the sea, this site is located on a side road in the center of the island, a bit further from the coast, making it less crowded. It’s a perfect stop for about an hour on your way back to town from the beach.

**Other Activities Besides the Moai**
While the stone statues are undoubtedly the main attraction, Easter Island offers a rich and diverse ecosystem, including reefs, beaches, volcanoes, and forests. If you find yourself yearning for a break from the moai, these natural wonders are sure to captivate you.

Volcano: (Rano Kau) at the southern end of the island, you can drive directly to the top of the crater, offering a full view of the inside of the crater on one side and a panoramic view of the entire island on the other. Known as “The Navel of the Earth,” it’s a must-see for volcano enthusiasts and those who love sweeping vistas.

Beaches: (Anakena, Ovahe) on the northern side of the island, these are the only places where you can freely enter the water, ideal for swimming. With basic commercial facilities, they offer a perfect opportunity to soak in the waters of a South Pacific island.
Cave by the Seaside Cliff: (Ana Kakenga) on the western side of the island, this hidden gem is a unique adventure.

After parking, a half-hour walk leads to a refuge area used by locals during wartime. Enter through a narrow cave entrance, crouch along the wall, and as the path widens, you’ll reach a cave by the seaside cliff. This simple yet thrilling experience is not recommended for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia.
Flights
Experience the adventure of a round-trip journey between Santiago, the vibrant capital of Chile, and the mystical Easter Island. Book your flights on the South American official website, where you can enjoy special discounts if you choose the Spanish version. For those with wanderlust, keep an eye out for the resumption of the less-traveled route from Easter Island to Tahiti, which was temporarily suspended due to the pandemic.
Island Transportation
Discover the island at your own pace by renting a car in the town center. With mostly paved roads and straightforward two-way single lanes, driving around Easter Island is a breeze. This option allows you to explore every nook and cranny, immersing yourself in the unique island life. Alternatively, opt for one-day or half-day small group tours, which offer a convenient and hassle-free way to see the highlights.
Accommodation
Taha TAI, a charming hotel with breathtaking sea views, is just a short walk from the town center. Enjoy comfortable and clean accommodations that provide excellent value for money, making it the perfect base for your island adventures.
